VIR Double National – Rossini Drivers Carbonell And Steyn Trade Poles During Qualifying

The VIR Double National should have been such a great weekend for Rossini drivers Andrew Carbonell and Danny Steyn, but it just didn’t work out that way.

In all four qualifying sessions, Carbonell and Steyn were always either on the pole or in the top 4.

Saturdays Race 1 caught everyone off guard. The starter called the 5 minute mark while drivers were still at lunch and Carbonell did not make it to the grid in time throwing away a hard earned pole. Up front Steyn struggled from the onset with setup on his new car and slowly dropped back from the front to finish 7th. Carbonnel drove a great race coming from dead last to finish 11th.

Sunday’s Race 2 was held in soaking rain. Steyn, normally fast in the wet, took time to get used to the new Hoosier H2O’s and while everyone around him was flying off the track, Steyn kept calm, kept it on the track and finished 2nd to Todd Buras. Carbonell had another bout of bad luck and his car started to misfire on the outlap forcing him to pull over and once again start from the back. Again Carbonnel charged through the spray to finish 9th.
